A Book Publishing Company to Build Job Skills in Kids

As the mom of a child with autism, I see firsthand the struggles with inclusion and employment. Sadly, many employers do not see the amazing skills of children with disabilities. They often feel children will need extra support and guidance, taking away from the profit margin. This is why I am so excited to announce I am starting a book publishing company to build job skills in kids! I cannot wait to begin this journey and show the true potential of every individual I work with.

The Struggles over Employment for Individuals with Disabilities

Several challenges make it difficult for kids with disabilities to become hireable as they transition into the workforce. These barriers stem from societal, educational, and workplace-related factors.

1. Lack of Early Intervention & Skill Development

  • Many students with disabilities do not receive adequate career readiness training in school.

  • Schools often focus on academic accommodations rather than job skills, independence, and vocational training.

2. Employer Bias & Misconceptions

  • Some employers wrongly assume that hiring individuals with disabilities will be costly or difficult.

  • Misconceptions about productivity and the need for accommodations can lead to hiring discrimination.

3. Workplace Accessibility & Inclusion Challenges

  • Many workplaces are not fully accessible, making it difficult for people with disabilities to thrive.

Teaching Job Skills in My Business

When I decided to start a book publishing company to build job skills in kids, I wanted to provide an outlet. This included teaching job skills that individuals with disabilities need specific, explicit instruction over. As a mom, I knew these skills would not come naturally as they do with other children. By starting my own company, I would intentionally teach these skills. While doing this, the kids I employ would be included and surrounded by individuals with similar needs.

I created a few goals in my planning stages:

1. Build Career Readiness

  • Teach soft skills such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and time management. By doing this, my employees will gain independence and learn to make decisions independently. They will also learn to ask for help.

2. Offer Job Training

  • Since it is my company, I will begin training each individual. This includes how we write books, publish them, and the importance of marketing. My employees will learn about skills they like working on and areas they prefer to avoid.

3. Provide Assistive Technology & Accommodations

  • As the mom of a child with autism, I am familiar with so many ways to help a child overcome struggles. I can use screen readers, speech-to-text software, and an adaptive keyboard. My book publishing company will be supportive of all.

4. Ongoing Support & Coaching

  • When I created a book publishing company to teach kids job skills, I knew I was taking on a lot. However, someone needs to be the voice and support for individuals with disabilities, and I want to take on this role. I cannot wait to begin working and providing on-the-job support to my amazing group!

Publishing Opportunities

Another reason I created a book publishing company to help kids is the lack of diversity in book choices. I now get to change this!

Be on the lookout for FREE DOWNLOAD on my new book! These include one for teachers/parents and a romance book with neurodivergent characters. It is a free novel about a teacher with autism.

I have provided academic support to kids who have struggled most of my career. Now, I get to continue doing that and create a book publishing company to build job skills in kids. This fantastic opportunity will allow me to continue the education for individuals with disabilities while ensuring they have essential job skills.
