IEP Data

What is data on an IEP?

The data collected on your child’s IEP goal is the information collected to see if your child is meeting their goal. For example, if your child has a reading goal that wants them to answer literal questions in ⅔ trials with 80% accuracy. The data for this goal would be how your child did when they answered the questions.  Once you see this data you can see how your child is doing.

Why is it important?

The data is important because it helps you determine the progress they are making and if they inevitably are making progress toward mastering their goal. If your child was answering questions with 60% accuracy in ⅔ trials then you would know how much more growth they need before they master this goal. If you can see the actual questions they answered and how the data was collected these are skills you could address at home to help them grow in this area.

How is it measured?

Normally when goals are written they will specify how they are measured. This could be through teacher observations, work samples from class, or curriculum-based measures which are simple assessments teachers use to track a student’s growth.   Seeing how your child’s progress toward a skill is measured will help you understand how to track it yourself when your work with them at home.
